A Pennsylvania community is mourning after a child and his grandfather died in a car crash on Friday.

Zane Rupert, 12, and David Faulx, 65, were going north on Winfield Road in Winfield Township when their vehicle collided head-on with a semi-truck going in the opposite direction, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) said, according to ABC affiliate WTAE and The Butler Eagle.

The Jeep Wrangler driven by Faulx crossed into the southbound lane of the roadway while going around a sharp curve on the right-hand side of the road, per the Eagle and NBC affiliate WPXI.

Authorities said Faulx, who was not wearing a seatbelt, and Rupert, who was wearing a seatbelt, were pronounced dead at the scene, the Eagle reported.

Police believe the Jeep’s speed was a factor in the crash, WPXI and CBS affiliate KDKA-TV reported.

The 29-year-old driver of the semi-truck sustained minor injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital, according to the Eagle.

The PSP did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Ashley Mazur-Pettigrew, Rupert's aunt who organized a GoFundMe campaign for the family, described the 12-year-old as “an incredible young man” and “a wonderful friend to so many people.”

“His bright smile & energy always lit up a room,” Mazur-Pettigrew wrote in the description of the fundraiser, which has received nearly $12,000 in donations as of Monday afternoon.

Rupert attended the seventh grade at Knoch Middle School in Saxonburg, according to his obituary. He was also a member of the Saxonburg Spartans football team, and is remembered for “always being a jokester and trying to make people laugh.”
