"Wonder Woman" Director Patty Jenkins Will Make $9 Million for Sequel

The salary will make her the highest-paid woman in Hollywood.

Up, up, and away to female superhero domination on the big screen. According to a salary database obtained by Variety, Patty Jenkins will reportedly make an astounding $9 million for directing the upcoming Wonder Woman 2, which is three times what she made on the first movie in the franchise. This sum, Variety noted, is likely the highest amount of money a female director has been paid in Hollywood for a single film. (A director like Nancy Meyers, while prolific in her own right, works exclusively in quieter, rom-com films, which doesn't necessarily equate to the amount paid for supervising a massive superhero franchise.)

That payday is wholly deserved for Patty, especially since Wonder Woman was both a box office and critical success, eventually securing her the title of the highest-grossing film for a female director ever. (It ultimately closed out the global box office with just over $820 million.) Gal Gadot will, of course, be returning for the sequel, the details of which the cast and crew are keeping under wraps for the element of surprise.

However, Patty teased a few plot developments in an interview late last year. "Because she is Wonder Woman and she's here now and she's fully developed," she explained, the second movie will have "great fun from the start, and great big superhero presence from the start, and is funny and a great love story again, and [has] a couple new unbelievable characters who I'm so excited about, who are very different than were in the last movie." (One of those characters will be a villain played by Kristen Wiig!) Patty continued: "It's really still going to [show] other values of hers, and a similar formula insofar as making a great, enjoyable fun movie, but that ultimately, in its third act, turns some very big issues, and a very big experience that will aim to have slightly more weight and profundity than it has to have. Because that's a formula that I really like. I like the idea of taking somebody on a very solid, great journey but that arrives at a bigger question being answered."

Wonder Woman 2 will arrive in December 2019.
