Justice League director Zack Snyder reveals story details about his unproduced Wonder Woman 1854 movie.

“The idea of that was an early riff we were doing: once Wonder Woman left the island in search of Ares, what happened to her in her different incarnations?” Snyder said in an interview with Empire Magazine when asked about a tweet in 2021 of Gal Gadot‘s Diana Prince posing in the background of the Crimean War. “My idea for it was that she would travel around the world looking for Ares, and she would go to every place where there was conflict.”

“On those battlefields, she found these lovers, warriors, and they would age out because she is immortal,” Snyder continued. “They would be her lover for ten years, or they might die in battle, and it was probably sad for a lot of the guys because they would see her starting to be nice to the next young soldier and be like, ‘Oh, I’m being replaced.’ But all the guys that she had with her were those loyal warriors she found on the battlefields all over the world.”

Snyder added that the events of the unrealized story set before the 2017 blockbuster would have served as a pivotal time in Diana’s life and how it would have led her toward Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). “We talked about if Steve Trevor was there in Crimea,” Snyder said. “It was never a screenplay, but we talked about it so much that it kind of had its own life.”

Snyder’s 1854 idea was dropped in favor of the World War I-era storyline that emphasized Diana and Steve’s budding romance and her climatic showdown with Ares. Released in the summer of 2017, Wonder Woman earned strong praise from critics and the historic box office making Gadot into an international superstar. Wonder Woman 1984, however, divided critics and failed to make a profit due to the HBO Max home release strategy. Wonder Woman 3 was finally announced by Warner Bros. shortly after the sequel’s release, with Gadot and director Patty Jenkins expected to return. The project was canceled after James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed to run DC Studios.

Paradise Lost

DC Studios plans to move forward on the prequel series Paradise Lost for Max. Promoted as a political drama in the style of Game of Thrones set several years before the birth of Diana, the series will explore the Amazonians and their power struggle in Themyscira.

Paradise Lost does not have a release date.
