Last year, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard took the Internet by storm. The ex-couple was entangled in a public trial, in which Depp accused Heard of defamation, following the publication of her Washington Post op-ed. There, Heard claimed to be a victim of domestic abuse. Though the actress did not explicitly name Depp, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor believed the essay tarnished his reputation. He sued Heard for $50 million, and Heard promptly countersued for $100 million. The court proceedings—which lasted for six weeks—aired on Court TV and the Law & Crime YouTube channel, which lead to public scrutiny and vitriol as details of their marriage made their way to the public.

The winding case left many viewers confused, because Depp and Heard’s testimonies contradicted each other. Now, Netflix is unpacking the infamous trial in Depp v. Heard, a three-part documentary. The series places both actors’ testimonies side by side, while interviewing Internet personalities who closely followed the trial. Depp v. Heard debuted all three of its episodes on August 16.

As shown in the documentary, the case ended after a long, painful trial—where both Depp and Heard accused the other of abuse. In the end, Heard was found guilty. The jury originally awarded Depp $15 million in damages, but the number was later reduced to around $10 million. Meanwhile, Heard was awarded $2 million in damages, which she then appealed. Heard and Depp eventually settled in December 2022. The actress paid Depp $1 million, which was donated to various charities.

Following the trial, Heard said she was "disappointed" and "heartbroken" by the outcome. A juror explained their reason for siding with Depp on Good Morning America. "A lot of Amber’s story didn’t add up," they said. "The majority of the jury felt she was more the aggressor. The crying, the facial expressions that she had, the staring at the jury. All of us were very uncomfortable."
