Women rejoice over Word of the Year announcement: 'Feminism'

The votes are in for 2017, and we now know the Word of the Year from the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Drumroll, please… Feminism has been chosen as the year’s top word.

Annually, the dictionary company tracks the number of word searches throughout the year to come up with its top word. Feminism won overall thanks to search spikes after specific events, including the Women’s March in January and the height of the #metoo movement. The word also gained searches after Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, said during an interview that she does not consider herself a feminist. Feminism was also searched in conjunction with entertainment this year. People looked up the word while searching for Hulu’s series The Handmaid’s Tale and Wonder Woman.

Not surprisingly, women rejoiced over another feminist victory. Twitter lit up with happy responses to the word-of-the-year news.

Kylie Jenner was also in the news today, albeit the reason had nothing to do with feminism. The reality star turned beauty guru released a new product to Kylie Cosmetics: high-end, luxury makeup brushes. The catch? The silver-and-white 16-brush kit will set you back $360.

Fans were livid about the expensive price tag, and they voiced their opinions on social media.

You make a valid point, 21 Santa.

Jenner did respond to the backlash. In addition to defending the quality of her brushes — they’re made with real animal hair — she also compared the price of her product with other high-end beauty brands Artis, Kevyn Aucoin, and MAC.

Jenner ultimately caved under the pressure of her fans’ anger and promised a lower-end, synthetic set of brushes in the future.

Well, if you couldn’t afford the brushes as stocking stuffers this year, maybe the cheaper version will be out by next Christmas.
