Woman Says She Regrets Asking Adopted Son’s Biological Mother For Help With His Behavior Issues

Amy and her husband, Jeremy, adopted Nick out of foster care when he was 12. The couple says their son’s behavior has been out of control for years.

When Amy became Nick’s adoption counselor she says he had already passed through a dozen foster families and two group care homes inside of six years. She says Nick was abused and, neglected prior to meeting her. And no matter where he was placed, she says, he was inevitably sent back into the system. Then she and her husband, Jeremy, adopted him at the age of 12.

Now Nick is 17 and Amy claims her son’s behavior has been out of control for years. She claims he’s set fires, been caught selling drugs, has become verbally abusive and physically aggressive with family members and others. Amy says it was out of desperation that she finally turned to Nick’s biological mother, Lupita, for help. Something she says she now regrets.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Lupita did what she could to turn Nick against us when he was with her,” says Amy. Nick hadn’t seen his biological mother, who lives almost 600 miles away since her parental rights were terminated a decade ago after she was sent to prison for violating probation on child abuse charges (not related to Nick) when he was 6.

Amy claims that when she and Jeremy sent Nick to visit Lupita, “Slowly, he stopped wanting to communicate with us, he was no longer referring to Jeremy and I as Mom and Dad – and he was telling us that if we tried to make him come back, he would run away.”

On Friday’s Dr. Phil, hear why Amy says she believes Lupita attempted to turn Nick against his adoptive family, and why Lupita claims Amy discarded Nick “like a dog” when she sent him to stay with her.
