Woman Dies After 100-Foot Fall Inside Cave

Rescuers located the victim and extricated her body from the cave in Virginia, which is home to more than 4,000 caves

A woman died on Friday after falling roughly 100 feet inside a cave near Pearisburg, Virginia.

The victim fell shortly after 4 p.m. within a Staffordsville community cave, according to a news release from Giles County Emergency Services. She has been identified by DMV records as 38-year-old Autumn Nicole Draper of Fairlawn, Virginia, according to Giles County Emergency Services Coordinator Jon Butler, per CNN, WDBJ 7 and WFXR.

Local authorities and rescuers located the deceased woman upon entering the cave, and eventually extricated her body.

They cleared the scene in Staffordsville, which is located about eight miles south of Pearisburg, at around 1 a.m. on Saturday.

Virginia is home to more than 4,000 caves and, according to a Virginia Department of Energy brochure, the caves are used by humans for “shelter, religious purposes, moonshine production, mining of saltpetre, groundwater, scientific and educational research, recreation, and as commercial attractions.”

It is unknown what Draper was doing in the cave.

The Giles County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident after the rescue, which was aided by the Pearisburg Fire Department, the Giles Lifesaving & Rescue Squad, Celco’s emergency response team and the Blacksburg Rescue Squad.
