Woman from California shares the biggest culture shocks she faced after moving to Iowa: ‘It’s crazy different’

A Californian is going viral after sharing the biggest culture shocks she faced after moving to Iowa.

The clip comes courtesy of Katie Bishop (@katphishhbishh), a podcaster and CRNA student now living in Iowa. Her video, about the most surprising differences between her old state and new one, now has over 800,000 views.

It’s the latest entry in a long line of posts about culture shocks TikTokers have faced after moving.

In one clip, an American woman shared the biggest differences she’s noticed while living in the U.K. In another, a woman living in Paris explained why some French people seem “rude” to Americans.

Bishop’s move was less significant, but she still raised plenty of points that both Iowans and Californians related to.

“I just moved to Iowa after living my entire life in California,” she says in the clip. “And it’s crazy different.”

Bishop begins by explaining the “perks” she likes most about living in the Midwest. For one, she says she loves the seemingly shorter lines at department and grocery stores.

“You go to Trader Joe’s on like a Friday evening, and there’s not like 400 people in there, lines out the door,” she adds.

Bishop believes the difference is largely due to population density. In fact, California is the 11th most densely populated state (255 people per square mile), while Iowa ranks 37th (57 people per square mile).

In her video, Bishop goes on to say that population also plays a role in the stereotype that Midwesterners are so nice.

“The population is so low, but the size of the stores is the same or bigger,” she claims. “And because the [employees] aren’t overworked … the workers are in a better mood.”

Many TikTok commenters agreed with the analysis, but some didn’t want their “secret” to get out.

“Hey this is our secret no need to tell Californians about it,” one user joked.

“As an Iowan, it is such an underrated state! Cheap living, lower but not crazy small populations, land, no traffic,” another agreed.

“Just don’t bring CA to Iowa,” another added.
