The Liam Hemsworth-led season 4, which has started production, will shoot back to back with season 5.

Netflix has settled on an endgame for the saga of The Witcher.

The streaming giant announced Thursday that the fantasy series adaptation of author Andrzej Sapkowski novels has been renewed for season 5, which will also be the show's last.

Season 4 has now officially started production, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia after previous star Henry Cavill stepped down. This new batch of episodes will be shot back to back with season 5. The last two seasons will now adapt the events of Sapkowski's Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.

“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a statement published by Tudum. “We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”

Netflix announced the series renewal and start of production with footage from the cast table read, showing Hemsworth alongside Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, and Joey Batey, who return as Yennefer, Ciri, and Jaskier, respectively.

Earlier in the month, Hemsworth, known primarily for The Hunger Games, posted a photo of himself in the gym, revealing he has significantly bulked up ahead of his debut as Geralt.

“As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” the actor said in a previous statement. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

"After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season 3, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other," the official season 4 logline reads. "If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again."

Newcomers to the cast include Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, John Wick) as fan-favorite Barber-surgeon Regis, Sharlto Copley (District 9, Monkey Man) as infamous bounty hunter Leo Bonhart, James Purefoy (The Following, Solomon Kane) as Emhyr’s court advisor and high-ranking spy Skellen, and Danny Woodburn (Watchmen, Mirror Mirror) as dwarf Zoltan.

Cavill released the following statement when Netflix announced his leave from the lead role: "My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him — enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
