How “Wish” 'Embraces' Disney's Legacy While 'Looking Towards the Future' (Exclusive Video)

Disney's new film 'Wish' is in theaters Nov. 22, as the Walt Disney Company celebrates its 100th anniversary this year

Wish honors 100 years of Disney animated movies.

The new musical comedy, which stars Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine with original songs by Julia Michaels, is hitting theaters as the Walt Disney Company celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

In a behind-the-scenes video shared exclusively with PEOPLE, the cast and crew explain how Wish honors the Disney classics that came before while also paving the way to future films.

Co-director Chris Buck says, "Starting off on Wish, we pinned a still from every single one of the movies we've done on a board. You could see the breadth of all the Disney animated features."

He adds, "It's a dream come true to be able to celebrate the studio and do a film that really embraces our legacy but also is looking towards the future."

"And this concept of daring to wish upon a star," says co-writer Jennifer Lee, "that resonated for all of us."

Wish is also co-directed by Fawn Veerasunthorn. The voice cast also includes Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, Natasha Rothwell, Jennifer Kumiyama, Evan Peters, Harvey Guillén, Ramy Youssef, Niko Vargas, Jon Rudnitsky and Della Saba.

"This film is celebrating a hundred years of Disney animation, and it's so special to me," says Oscar-winner DeBose in the clip, adding, "When I first heard the music for this film I was so moved. Every single song tells this story in a way that is so dynamic."

Set in the magical kingdom of Rosas, Asha (DeBose), a "sharp-witted idealist," makes a wish that is "so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called Star," per a synopsis.
