Quintez Cephus, Wisconsin's top WR, out for the year (Update)

In an updated injury report released Thursday, Wisconsin officially ruled wide receiver Quintez Cephus out for the rest of the season. Cephus, a sophomore, is tied for the team lead in receptions with 30 and leads the Badgers in receiving yards (501) and receiving touchdowns (6). Coach Paul Chryst said Thursday Cephus had surgery.

Wisconsin (9-0), ranked No. 8 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, hosts No. 20 Iowa on Saturday.

Wisconsin is pretty banged up heading into Saturday’s important home game against Iowa.

Both wide receiver Quintez Cephus and linebacker Chris Orr were listed as out on the team’s injury report Monday. However, neither — as of now — have been ruled out for the remainder of the season. Both were injured in the Badgers’ win at Indiana over the weekend.

UW coach Paul Chryst made it seem like the leg injury to Cephus, which occurred when an offensive lineman rolled up on the back of his leg as he blocked on a running play, was more serious than Orr’s.

“I know [Cephus] is going to meet with the doctor today or tomorrow and see a little bit more,” Chryst said.

Cephus leads the Badgers with 501 receiving yards and six touchdowns and is tied with tight end Troy Fumagalli in receptions (30).

Orr suffered a torn ACL on his first defensive snap of the 2016 season but has rebounded to be a major contributor in 2017, starting eight of the Badgers’ nine games and totaling 35 tackles and two sacks. The injury report said Orr has a left leg injury.

Also on the injury report was safety D’Cota Dixon, who is listed as questionable with a right leg injury. Dixon leads the Badgers with 46 tackles.

Wisconsin, now 9-0 after the 45-17 win in Bloomington, are the only undefeated team left in the Big Ten and likely the conference’s only team with a realistic shot of reaching the College Football Playoff. The visit from Iowa (6-3, 3-3), which stunned No. 6 Ohio State over the weekend in Iowa City, 55-24, will be one of Wisconsin’s few remaining chances to impress the College Football Playoff committee.

Wisconsin, ranked No. 9 in the first CFP rankings, are in line for a climb in the rankings after losses by OSU and Penn State. Iowa, unranked last week, could find itself in the CFP rankings.
