Wind advisory in effect with gusts up to 45 mph, first sight of snow expected this weekend

A series of weak troughs and cold fronts are expected to bring us our first flakes of the winter season, as forecasters are calling for light snow showers for most of northern New Jersey and a wintry mix elsewhere on Sunday.

A low pressure system is expected to develop off the New Jersey coastline sometime Sunday morning and rapidly exit, producing a period of light snow away from the coast and a wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain along the coast in the afternoon and evening hours, said Steven DiMartino, a private meteorologist with NY NJ PA Weather.

"All precipitation will mix over to snow before ending on Sunday night," DiMartino said. "Minor snow accumulation will be possible, with snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches expected for elevations above 700 feet and a trace to an inch below 700 feet."

Prior to those conditions, it will be a chilly day across New Jersey on Friday as a wind advisory is already in effect for Monmouth and Ocean counties, which includes gusts between 35 to 45 mph and a slight chance of light snow in the northwestern part of the state — specifically in northern Warren and Sussex counties, according to the National Weather Service.

The wind advisory will last through 10 p.m. Friday, as coastal areas along Atlantic, Cape May, Monmouth and Ocean counties can expect northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph throughout the day, forecasters said.

No significant rainfall is expected, but some areas could see downed tree limbs and scattered power outages on Friday, the weather service said.

Parts of western Passaic, Sussex and Warren counties could see a dusting of snow on Friday, as forecasters say less than an inch of accumulation is expected.

Temperatures statewide will range from the high 30s to low 40s for highs, as winds are expected to diminish by Friday evening, but gusts will still be as high as 30 mph as temperatures fall into the 20s, according to the weather service.

More troughs and cold fronts are expected to pass through the region next week, as some steadier snowfall is expected to be a threat for some areas in northwestern New Jersey, forecasters said.

On Tuesday, another area of low pressure combined with a cold front will approach with scattered showers along the coast and a "mix of rain and snow showers changing over to snow showers across New Jersey," DiMartino said.
