Garbiñe Muguruza advances to women's Wimbledon final

Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain advanced to her second Wimbledon final in three years on Thursday, defeating unseeded Slovakian Magdaléna Rybáriková in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

Muguruza won the French Open in 2016, and had little trouble cruising to victory on Thursday — facing only a single break point throughout the match.

This is the end of a Cinderella run for Rybáriková. The 28-year-old, ranked No. 87 in the world, upset two seeded players during her inspiring run, including American Coco Vandeweghe in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Rybáriková came into the match with an 18-1 record on grass this season, but she appeared anxious in her first Grand Slam semifinal.

In a postmatch interview, Muguruza said she is playing with a lot of confidence right now.

“I played very well, for sure,” the Spaniard said. “It was a tricky match — she’s a very tricky player and was playing very well throughout the tournament. But I was super confident and played well. Once you’re in this situation, you know how to deal with it.”

Muguruza, who is the No. 14 seed, will now face either five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams or Johanna Konta in the final on Saturday.
