Wimbledon 2018: With many top seeds eliminated, Serena Williams advances to third round looking poised for long run
Serena Williams continued her Wimbledon comeback Wednesday morning, defeating Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-4 on Centre Court at the All England Club.
Though the result was the same, Williams played significantly better than in her first-round win against Russian Arantxa Rus. She was visibly more comfortable in her play, and appeared to be moving better.
She acknowledged the difference post-match: “It was better than my first round, happy I’m going in the right direction.” However, she wasn’t particularly impressed with her own ability to move, saying, “I’ve been moving a lot better since Paris, so that’s old news.”
Williams won the tournament in 2016, but missed the 2017 tournament while she was pregnant with her first child, born last September.
By awarding her the No. 25 seed, Wimbledon organizers guaranteed that Williams would not face another seeded player in the first two round. In the third round, she could potentially have faced a player seeded one No. 1 through 8. However, the No. 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 seeds – Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens, and Elina Svitolina, Caroline Garcia, and Petra Kvitová – have already been eliminated.
Williams has now won her last 16-straight Wimbledon matches, and will face either Kristina Mladenovic or Tatjana Maria in the third round on Friday.
