"George & Tammy," the Wilmington-shot Showtime series about country music legends George Jones and Tammy Wynette, has received four Emmy Award nominations.

Michael Shannon, who played Jones, was nominated for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Jessica Chastain, who played Wynette, was nominated for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

"George & Tammy was also nominated for Outstanding Cinematography For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie and for Outstanding Period Costumes For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie.

Chastain won a Screen Actors Guild Award in February for outstanding performance by a female actor in a television movie or limited series for playing Wynette.

The nominations for the Emmys, the most prestigious and coveted in the television industry, were announced Wednesday morning. The ceremony for the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sept. 18 in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on Fox.

Based in part on a book, "The Three of Us," by the couple's only child, Georgette Jones, "George & Tammy" was shot in the Wilmington area in late 2021 and early 2022 with an estimated $50 million budget.

Area locations prominently featured in the show include Thalian Hall, the Love Grove Memorial Bridge, Wilmington bar and music venue The Rusty Nail, Legion Stadium, a house on Blythe Road in Wilmington's Glen Meade neighborhood and various downtown Wilmington streets.

The show was generally well-reviewed, although Tyler Mahan Coe, who writes and produces the acclaimed classic country music podcast "Cocaine & Rhinestones" and is the son of country singer David Allan Coe, has accused the show's writers of plagiarism, saying a monologue spoken by Jones in a bar was taken from his podcast without his permission.

"George & Tammy," of which Chastain is a co-producer, was created by Abe Sylvia ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye"), who is among a half-dozen credited writers on the show's Internet Movie Database page.
