A Wilmington-shot movie thriller is set to hit screens just in time for Christmas.

According to its website, "Breakwater," which shot in the Wilmington area and the Outer Banks in 2021, will hit theaters and video-on-demand Dec. 22.

It's being distributed by Vertical Entertainment, but whether the movie will play in Wilmington-area theaters isn't yet known.

Written and directed by James Rowe, "Breakwater" stars Dermot Mulroney ("My Best Friend's Wedding," "The Grey") as Ray, an inmate who convinces a fellow prisoner, who's set to be released, to track down Ray's daughther. If the film's trailer is to be believed, however, Ray's intentions might not be entirely noble.

"Breakwater" also stars Mena Suvari ("American Beauty," "American Pie"), Darren Mann ("Yellowstone" prequel "1923"), Alyssa Goss ("The Bobby Brown Story") and Sonja Sohn ("The Wire").

Mulroney also spent time in the Wilmington area for Netflix's 2022 release "Along for the Ride," in which he played a self-absorbed writer who's the dad of the movie's main character, played by Emma Pasarow.

In September at the Boston Film Festival, "Breakwater" netted the Audience Favorite Feature award as well as Best Actor for Mulroney.

Visible in the movie's trailer are several shots of the New Hanover County Correctional Center on Division Drive, as well as a shot of Burnett Boulevard near Winnie's Tavern.

The historic Mt. Lebanon Chapel on the grounds of Airlie Gardens also gets some screen time, both inside and out, as do some area marshlands.

In addition to the Wilmington area, "Breakwater" also shot on the Outer Banks, and the trailer features several shots of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
