Willie Spence, the “American Idol” Season 19 runner-up, died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a car accident in Tennessee. He was 23 years old.

His death was first reported by his Georgia hometown’s local outlet, DouglasNow. “We extend our condolences to Willie’s family, friends, and fans. He was an extraordinary talent and a ray of light to millions across the world. He will be missed,” they wrote on Facebook.

NBC reports that the accident happened around 4 p.m. local time in Marion County in East Tennessee. Driving a 2019 Jeep Cherokee, he veered off the road and collided into the back of a tractor trailer that was parked on the interstate’s shoulder.

Singer Katharine McPhee, who performed a duet with Spence during his Season 19 run, reacted on Instagram, as well, posting videos of the young singer.

“I received very tragic news tonight,” she wrote above a video of her and Spence meeting. “Sweet @williespenceofficial passed away in a car accident. Only 23 years old. Life is so unfair and nothing is ever promised. God rest your soul Willie. It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you.”

Two years ago, Spence gave a performance of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” during his “Idol” audition, getting a standing ovation from judge Lionel Richie, who called him an “undeniable star.” Spence eventually earned a spot at the Season 19 finale opposite to Chayce Beckham, during which he sang “Georgia on My Mind,” “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Stand Up.”

Following his time on “American Idol,” he released three singles and a six-track EP, “The Voice.” He was scheduled to perform in London on Nov. 12.
