For the shortest month of the year (even with an extra day in '24), there sure are a lot of things going on in February in the Jacksonville area. We've got festivals, a marathon, Black History Month events, Valentine's Day things, a big concert series in St. Augustine, big-name comedians, bullriders, college basketball, Florida Man and a visit from Napoleon, Pedro and Uncle Rico.

Feb. 4 at the Beaches

The annual marathon to raise money for the fight against breast cancer got a little complicated when Donna Deagan, who started the whole thing, was elected mayor of Jacksonville last year. The mostly flat course starts and finishes at Seawalk Pavilion. Info: breastcancermarathon.com

Battle of Olustee Reenactment

Feb. 16-18 at Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park 

In 1864, more than 10,000 Union and Confederate troops fought in Florida's largest Civil War battle at a site that is now a state park about 60 miles west of Jacksonville. Reenactors will replay the battle (spoiler alert: the rebels win) on Sunday afternoon. Authentic camps and a sutler's village where visitors can watch craftsmen ply their trade are open all weekend. World of Nations Celebration

Feb. 24-25 at Tailgaters Parking 

Twenty-six nations will be represented at the festival, which celebrates cultures from around the world. You’ll find lots of good food, exotic costumes and interesting music and dance performances, plus the kids might learn a thing or two. Info: specialevents.coj.net

The Northeast Florida Scottish Highland Games return to Clay County the last Saturday in February.

Feb. 24 at the Clay County Fairgrounds

This part of the state isn’t particularly known for its large Scottish population, but this festival has caught on. There are Scottish clans and bagpipes and food, but the big draw is the games, where men in kilts throw caber poles and toss heavy stuff as high as they can. Fans can get a double-dip in 2024 when the Scottish Athletic Masters World Championship comes to the same venue Oct. 4-6. Info: neflgames.com

‘A Place for All People’

Flight to Freedom Reenactment

Feb. 1-3 at Fort Mose Historic State Park, St. Augustine 

In the days when Florida was under Spanish control, hundreds of slaves escaped from Georgia and the Carolinas and made their way to freedom at Fort Mose, the first legally sanctioned free African settlement in what is now the United States.
