William Shatner on Falling-Out With Leonard Nimoy: ‘I Have No Idea Why’

On Today, William Shatner sat down with Savannah Guthrie to discuss his new book, Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship With a Remarkable Man. In it, he details his friendship with fellow Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy. While the two weren’t exactly close during the filming of the show, they were able to bond afterward because of the many Star Trek conventions and reunions they attended. “Usually, you’re best friends forever while the show is on, whatever the show is, and then when the show is over, you say, ‘I’ll see you tomorrow’ and you don’t, because life takes you apart and, in many cases, you never see each other again,” Shatner said. “But in this case, fate threw us together with all these appearances and films. … We became very close.”

Shatner has many fond memories of Nimoy, but the two apparently had a rocky finish to their friendship. An apparent falling-out distanced them from each other despite Shatner’s attempts to mend the relationship. “I have no idea why. I sought to find out why, couldn’t,” said Shatner. “I thought whatever it was would blow over and he’d tell me what it was and I would try to make amends or find some common ground, but he died before that could happen.”
