This afternoon, the royal family announced the extraordinarily sad news that Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has died aged 99. The royal passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle, not long after returning home from a month-long stay in hospital.

While Prince Charles, Prince William and Kate Middleton, and the rest of the royal family are yet to make a public announcement in the wake of their father and grandfather's death, there has been a notable change to all official royal family social media accounts in honour of the Duke of Edinburgh.

On Twitter, where each account used to have a personalised photograph as their background cover image, the Royal Family, Clarence House, and the Kensington Royal accounts now all feature the same black and white picture of Prince Philip. On Instagram there is no such change, but all the accounts have shared the royal family's post, informing the public of Prince Philip's death, to their Stories.

Similarly, the official royal family website is now no longer accessible. Instead, all that's visible is a holding page with the same image of the Duke of Edinburgh - this time in colour - and the words: "The Duke of Edinburgh1921 - 2021."

Underneath, the official statement of his death is published, reading:

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

It adds at the bottom, "The official website of the Royal Family is temporarily unavailable while appropriate changes are made."
