William H. Macy Is 'Proud' of “Shameless” Son Jeremy Allen White's 'Huge Career' — But Jokes He Should Keep His Pants On

The actors starred as father-and-son duo Frank and Lip Gallagher for 10 years on Showtime's longest-running show

William H. Macy and Jeremy Allen White will always be family.

The actors spent 10 years portraying a father-son duo on Shameless — Macy, 73, played absentee father-of-six Frank Gallagher while White, 33, played his son and fan-favorite, Lip — and the love shared between them hasn’t faded.

“He’s got a huge career. I’m really proud of him,” Macy told Entertainment Tonight of his former on-screen son, before giving White’s hit series a shoutout. “I’m such a fan of The Bear.”

The Fargo star also shared his fatherly opinion on White’s headline-making underwear campaign for Calvin Klein as he quipped, “Now he’s on billboards in his underwear.”

“I had to speak to him about that. You know, as his father,” Macy shared. During that conversation, the actor said he told White, “Put your pants on.”

He did concede, though, that given White’s storyline on Shameless, he’s already “had his pants off a good amount” before.

Shameless, Showtime’s longest-running show, aired its final episode in 2021 after 11 seasons, and the cast bid an emotional goodbye to the hit comedy.

Writing on X (formerly Twitter) ahead of the finale, Macy called it the “end of an era” as he said “Goodbye Shameless” and shared a cheeky photo of the smiling cast smiling flipping off the camera.

Emma Kenney, who played Debbie, wrote on her Instagram Story at the time, “Can't believe I'm saying this but... tomorrow night is the last episode of our show.”

Cameron Monaghan called his time on the show “11 of the greatest years of my life,” as he bid farewell to his character, Ian, the middle child of the chaotic Gallagher bunch, writing on his Instagram Story, “It was an honor to know you.”

White reflected on his decade-long run on the show to Variety in 2022 as he admitted that he “wasn’t sure shows are meant to go that long.”

“There was a period where I stopped feeling like an actor and I started feeling like I was just here to do this show,” he said.

Still, he said, “I love Shameless so much. I love everybody that was a part of it, and the experience was incredible.”

The show’s conclusion came three years after one of the original cast members, Emmy Rossum, departed. Rossum, who played scrappy Fiona and was responsible for keeping the Gallagher family together, announced her exit on Facebook, writing at the time that it was a “hard thing to put into words.”

“The opportunity to play Fiona has been a gift. There are few characters — female or otherwise — as layered and dynamic,” she wrote of her character before confirming her exit.

“I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block."

Macy praised his on-screen daughter’s decision the next day and shared that the cast had been “expecting” the announcement.

“It’s hard not to think of: ‘What would my life be post-Shameless?’ And part of it is very frightening and part of it is very exciting,” Macy told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “She’s young and I think she’s made the right choice.”

White also reflected on the departure, telling Variety, "As sad as I am to lose Emmy as an acting partner, it's kind of exciting because it's going to be a different show. It'll mix things up."
