Wilco have unveiled the title track from their upcoming album, Cousin. Stream it below.
Taken literally, “Cousin” describes a fight with a relative, but it also serves as a song for Jeff Tweedy to push listeners to acknowledge the flaws in themselves that they see in others. “My cousin/ I’m you,” he sings. “When your red lines/ Get crossed with mine/ I object to you/ Our deal’s un-struck.”
Produced by Cate Le Bon, Cousin is the first Wilco album to be helmed by an outside producer since 2007’s Sky Blue Sky. Regarding the title, Tweedy explained, “I’m [a] cousin to the world. I don’t feel like I’m a blood relation, but maybe I’m a cousin by marriage. It’s this feeling of being in it and out of it at the same time.”
Cousin drops on September 29th via Wilco’s own dBpm Records, and pre-orders are ongoing. It also includes the previous single “Evicted.”
In support of the album, Wilco are headed out on a run of US shows beginning later this month, which they’ll follow with their Sky Blue Sky Festival in December.
