After years of anticipation, the first trailer for Wicked starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The film, adapted from the famous Broadway musical which is also based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire titled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, is set in the universe of Oz before Dorothy arrives from Kansas. Glinda, known as Glinda the Good Witch, is played by Grande and Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, is portrayed by Erivo. The film version is said to expand on the stage version’s plot. The original Broadway production took home three Tony Awards and a Grammy.

The trailer shows when Glinda and Elphaba meet for the first time in school, a moment that sparks an unlikely and eventually complicated friendship between the two for the rest of their lives. Viewers also get a glimpse of Michelle Yeoh who plays Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and Jeff Goldblum as “the great and powerful Wizard Oz.” The film also stars Bowen Yang and Grande’s boyfriend, Ethan Slater, as Boq, a munchkin who’s deeply infatuated with her character. Grande and Slater made plenty of headlines for dating each other during the making of the film.

Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians), Wicked is a two-part film. Its first part is set to be released in theaters on November 27, 2024, and its second part will hit theaters November 26, 2025.
