‘Wicked’ Leads 13% Broadway Box Office Surge; Liev Schreiber Looks Hot In ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’

The Broadway box office sprang to life last week, with 25 of 29 shows registering gains over the previous week. Leading the pack were Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked, at the Nederlander Organization’s Gershwin, up $351.4K to $1.72 million, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock, up $287.4K to $1.1 million at the Shubert Organization’s Winter Garden Theatre.

Other shows enjoying the abbondanza were Disney’s duo, Aladdin (up $225K to $1.53 million at the New Amsterdam) and The Lion King (up $194K to $2 million at the Nederlanders’ Minskoff). An American in Paris, at the Nederlanders’ Palace, closed earlier than expected but went out on a high note, with a $182K kick to $1.1 million. Matilda, at the Shubert, jumped $167.7K to $822K, and Paramour, at the Ambassador Theatre Group’s Lyric, bounced up $133.6K to $929.6K.

Among the newcomers, the Nathan Lane/John Slattery-driven revival of The Front Page, at the Shuberts’ Broadhurst, continues to look like a blockbuster, gaining $137K to $1.2 million for eight previews with an average ticket price of $129.31. The Encounter, which opened to mostly great notices, was up $40K to $337K at the Shuberts’ Golden. The revival of Falsettos, at co-producer Jujamcyn’s Walter Kerr, notched $404K for seven previews.

Week 20 0f the 2016-17 season took in $25.9 million, a 13 percent hike over Week 19 and about even with the same week a year ago. Highest average ticket price was for Hamilton, at $205.87. Among the previewers, a revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, starring Liev Schreiber and Janet McTeer, demonstrated some star power with an average ticket price of $135.19 for its first preview at the Shuberts’ Booth.
