Walmart, the multinational retail company known for its low prices and wide variety of products, is undergoing a massive makeover.

About 117 stores across the U.S. are being remodeled and will be revealed on Friday, Nov. 3, on what is being called the “Second Best Day.” This is the largest single-day rollout of re-grand openings in company history.

Walmart is investing over $9 billion over two years to upgrade and modernize more than 1,400 stores in the United States, according to a news release.

Is Walmart getting a makeover?

Yes. By this weekend, Walmart will have reopened 117 remodeled stores nationwide. The reopening is part of 1,400 store upgrades that will be made over two years.

What new changes are coming to Walmart?

The remodeled Walmart stores will include:

  • Refreshed interiors and exteriors, including new paint and flooring, modernized restrooms, new fixtures, LED lighting and better line of sight throughout the store.

  • New signage for easier navigation.

  • More shopping carts.

  • Increased check-out options through staffed lanes and self-checkout areas.

  • Larger online grocery pickup and delivery areas.

  • Grab and go sections are being added for quick meal and drink options.

  • Displays will be enhanced at the corners of specific departments to let customers touch, feel and “become a part of the space.”

  • Some products will be displayed out of their boxes so customers can visualize them in their lives.

  • More space to explore.

  • Digital touchpoints using screens and QR codes to help communicate the products and services.

  • Pharmacies have moved to the front of the store and been expanded with private screening rooms for pharmacist consultations and services.

  • Updated customer service areas.

  • A private area for nursing mothers.

  • Vision center.

  • A new dollar shop at the store entrance will display seasonally relevant products.

Why are they remodeling Walmart?

Walmart said the renovation is creating local jobs, making it easier for employees to get customers what they want and providing customers with a high-quality shopping experience.

What Arizona Walmart stores have been remodeled?

There are 13 Walmart stores undergoing upgrades in 2023 in Arizona. The ones completed include:

  • 2675 W. Eighth St., Yuma.

  • 3721 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix.

  • 240 W. Baseline Road, Mesa.

  • 34399 N. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek.

  • 18680 S. Nogales Highway, Sahuarita.

  • 6145 N. 35th Ave., Phoenix.

  • 1260 E. Tucson Marketplace Blvd., Tucson.

  • 1710 S. Greenflied Road, Mesa.

  • 3460 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler.

  • 4747 E. Cactus Road, Phoenix.

Walmart stores at 1695 N. Arizona Blvd. in Coolidge and 7575 W. Lower Buckeye Road in Phoenix will have their grand re-openings on Friday, Nov. 3.

The Walmart store at 5290 S. Power Road in Gilbert will undergo upgrades in December.

This Phoenix Walmart is getting a mural

The Phoenix Walmart Supercenter at 7575 W. Lower Buckeye Road will get a mural designed and illustrated by Tony Plak and Menina. This mural will reflect the diversity and local culture of Phoenix as a part of Walmart’s Community Mural Project.

"This mural was inspired by the peculiar name of the city Phoenix," Plak and Menina said in a press release. "The vibrant colors of its sunsets, the color of the Earth that surrounds it, and its vegetation that despite the extreme weather is still standing as the hardworking people who live in this great city that every day is reborn as the phoenix bird and goes in search of a better tomorrow."
