Why Shakira Says 'Última' Will Be the Last Song She Writes About Ex Gerard Piqué

The singer opened up about the making of the track in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 on Wednesday

Shakira won't be writing any more songs about a certain ex.

During an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the "Whenever, Wherever" singer, 47, opened up about why "Última" is going to be the last song she writes about her ex-partner Gerard Piqué, whom she dated for 11 years until they split in 2022.

"Última" was the last track Shakira wrote for her forthcoming album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don't Cry Anymore), which was written "when the album was literally closed and there was no more time."

"I said, I got one more song here and it's like, it's — I gotta spit it out or I won't be able to, you know. I'll choke. I need to get this one out," she recalls.

It was "uncomfortable" for Shakira to grapple with the possibility of not being able to release the song.

"The people at Sony were like, 'No, no, no, no, there's no more time. This needs to be shipped, otherwise we're not going to make it to have the vinyls ready. You can't do anything else with this album,'" the "She Wolf" performer recalls of trying to convince her record label to release it. "Because I can endlessly continue working on the album, tweaking stuff, mixing, and never let it go. So they were like, 'It's time to, it's time to let it go, Shakira let it go.' Now I'm like, 'No, no, no, no. But there's one more, there's one more.'"

In one afternoon, Shakira recorded and mixed the song, which "was such a relief," and when she shared it with Sony, she elicited a surprising reaction.

"What's amazing about music is how people can connect to the same experience or to the same feeling, or even if they're not going through the same experience, just the empathy and the the mirror neurons that we all have that make us see our own reflection in, in this music," she begins. "So when I play this song to the head of marketing at Sony, he came, he started to cry. I have never seen a man cry in my studio before. I've seen many women cry in my studio, but no man. Uh, but he's a big softie."

She continues: "He started to cry with this song and I'm like, 'OK, I get it.' It's not only about me. This song is not about me only, or him or. But I'm glad I was able to include it in the album, even if it's the last song, the last song that I write to him."

Shakira's 12th studio album —Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don't Cry Anymore) — will be released this Friday. This will mark her first album release in seven years.

The 16-track record will feature eight never-before-heard songs, a remix, and seven previously released singles like “Music Sessions Vol. 53” with Bizarrap, “TQG” with Karol G, “Te Felicito” with Rauw Alejandro and “Copa Vacía” with Manuel Turizo.
