Why Rebecca Hall Prefers Countryside Life with Husband Morgan Spector: We're 'Pretty Quiet People' (Exclusive)

The actress says she enjoys going "back into hibernation" with her family at their "rural" countryside home

Rebecca Hall relishes in maintaining a quieter life outside of movie-making.

The British actress, who returns to lead the sci-fi sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, tells PEOPLE that while she and her husband, The Gilded Age actor Morgan Spector, enjoy occasional Hollywood glam, they prefer retreating to life elsewhere.

"We live in the countryside away from everything, a very rural situation," says Hall, 41. "We're actually pretty quiet people."

"But," she continues, "I think that as a result, when we go out ... when we do get the opportunity to really go out and do it, we both enjoy that and we do it and we have fun with it."

Hall and Spector, 43, who met costarring in the 2014 Broadway play Machinal together, married in 2015, and they welcomed their first child in 2018.

As part of awards season, the couple attended the Vanity Fair afterparty on Oscars weekend earlier this month for a stylish date night out in Los Angeles.

"It's really fun to go to that stuff when you don't have a movie that has anything to do with any of the races because you just see a lot of friends and you get to celebrate the industry," says Hall.

"Especially this year," she adds, "after the strikes and everything, everyone really wanted to let their hair down and have fun and just celebrate like, 'Okay, let's look to the future and make more movies and get people back into the cinema.' "

Glitzy industry events aside, Hall says she still dresses to the nines when she's keeping a low profile at home.

"I dress up even when I'm at home. Like, in the garden, I will dress up because I just really like clothes and I really like doing that," she says. "I feel like it's the first creative act of the day, so I will always construct an outfit even if no one's going to see it because I just enjoy that."

About planting her roots in the rural countryside, the actress-director, who also enjoys painting, explains it is all about balance.

"I like to live pretty quietly, but I also don't like to just do that," says Hall. "I like to have the option to then dip into a lot of culture in the city, and we live close enough that we can do that and just go and be out and see friends and do that for a while."

"I have my fill of that, and then I'm like, 'Right, back into hibernation!' " she adds.

Hall, whose late parents were theater director Peter Hall and opera singer Maria Ewing, admits her chosen career is both a "blessing and a curse" when it comes to prioritizing time with family.

"You can't be a responsible parent and not observe how crazy this job and this lifestyle is and try and set boundaries so that you're never that far away," she says.

"Sometimes it's very difficult and you're away a lot and you have a very unusual life and there's a lot of travel, and my family come with me and they adapt," says Hall. "But other times, it's a blessing because you work for a while and then you have months and months where you don't have to work."

The star counts herself "lucky" that her job allows her to "take time off and just be a full-time mom and parent and be at home" periodically.

"I paint when I'm at home to keep myself busy," says Hall, "and then I can go and pick my daughter up from school. I still feel like I've done something creative and I've done some work in the day that I'm not away."

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is in theaters Friday.
