2023 was a year full of highs and lows for fans of “Outlander.” HIGH: Their favorite romance epic returned for Season 7, Part 1 (which aired from June 16 to August 11) after more than a year-long drought. LOW: But it just failed to receive any Golden Globe nominations on the morning of Monday, December 11. HIGH: Starz officially green-lighted a prequel series titled “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” to air in the near future. LOW: But that meant the parent series would officially be ending with Season 8. Deep breaths, “Outlander” fans — we’ll all get through this together.

Voters of the Golden Globe association snubbed “Outlander” in the top Best Drama Series category, and its leading stars — Caitriona Balfe as Claire Fraser for Best Drama Actress and Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser for Best Drama Actor — were skunked, too. So why was Season 7, Part 1 of “Outlander” not nominated at the 2024 Golden Globes?

Simply put, members are notorious for only recognizing the newest and shiniest shows on television, and seven-season-old “Outlander” is elderly by comparison. In fact, none of the six programs nominated this year in the drama series category have been airing for that long. “1923,” “The Diplomat” and “The Last of Us” are brand new shows, while “The Morning Show” is up for Season 3, “Succession” for Season 4 and “The Crown” for Season 6.

“It’s so disappointing that after such a strong season, a real return to form, that Globes voters overlooked ‘Outlander’ this year,” complains Gold Derby Senior Editor (and “Outlander” superfan) Rob Licuria. “Not for nothing, but Caitriona Balfe scored four consecutive nominations back in the day. But this year, Sam Heughan delivered some of the most nuanced, heartbreaking work as our favorite rough diamond Jamie, and he’ll likely end up finishing his starring turn on this show without even a single nomination to show for it. Now THAT’s a travesty.”

And Paula Sullivan-Licuria, who regularly recaps “Outlander” for Gold Derby, agrees, shouting, “Come on! Again? Nothing again? What do they need to do?! Why do the voters have to nominate the same shows year in year out?”

The eight episodes of Season 7, Part 1 are based on Diana Gabaldon‘s book “An Echo in the Bone” and notably introduced new cast member Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom. Plot-wise, Claire and Jamie become caught up in the events of the American Revolutionary War prior to returning back home to Scotland.

Balfe’s category of TV drama actress features these six leading ladies: Helen Mirren (“1923”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”), Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”) and Emma Stone (“The Curse”).

Heughan’s TV drama actor race is a battle between the following six men: Brian Cox (“Succession”), Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”), Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”), Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) and Dominic West (“The Crown”).

Even though Golden Globes voters appear to have moved on from the show, it’s important to note that the first four seasons nabbed six total bids: four for Balfe (2016-2019), one for Tobias Menzies (2016) and one for series (2016). Heughan has yet to be recognized by the Globes, though he did win the Gold Derby Award for Best Drama Actor in both 2015 and 2020.
