Why Oprah, Nick Saban and Dana Scully Are TV’s Social Media MVPs of the Week

A beloved celebrity, the Alabama head coach and a favorite FBI agent had viewers talking passionately on social media over the past seven days.

The Wrap has partnered with Canvs, the emotion measurement company, for a weekly look at some of the characters and personalities that have TV viewers the most worked up on social media. The data below covers Jan. 3-9 and is drawn from the most emotionally reacted-to television programs, including broadcast, cable, streaming and PPV.

It should come as no shock that the 75th Golden Globe Awards, broadcast on NBC, were the most emotionally reacted-to program of the period measured with a whopping 631,533 Emotional Reactions (ERs). Of all the celebrities present, Oprah Winfrey was the one who stole the show — and viewers’ hearts — over the course of the evening. The talk show host and media personality was given the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement and proceeded to deliver an incredibly passionate and moving speech that made some hope she’ll run for president in 2020.

ESPN’s College Football Playoff National Championship game took place between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs and garnered 462,675 ERs, with Alabama head coach Nick Saban being the most mentioned person of the evening. This is particularly interesting because usually it’s the players who drive the conversation — but this time, with ‘Bama trailing at halftime, Saban made a gutsy choice to pull veteran quarterback Jalen Hurts in favor of freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa who ultimately helped lead his team to an overtime victory. Viewer opinion was split, with some praising Saban and others expressing disgust.

The 11th season of the “X-Files” premiered on Fox on Jan. 3 (17,224 ERs) and fans were absolutely thrilled at the return of FBI special agent Dana Scully (portrayed by Gillian Anderson): they mentioned her more than any other character or topic, including her partner and fellow agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny). Scully had a bit of a rough start in this episode, which began with her in a hospital bed, included a car crash, and ended with her back in the hospital, and viewers were feeling her pain.
