Keanu Reeves’ girlfriend Alexandra Grant is opening up about her gray hair. Ever since the 46-year-old artist went public with 55-year-old Reeves at last month’s LACMA Art + Film Gala in Los Angeles, fans have been buzzing about the relationship — and Grant’s silver strands. And while Grant certainly didn’t have to explain her natural locks to anyone, she just shared a bit of her hair backstory on social media.

On Wednesday, the Instagram account associated with Grant posted a Newsweek headline linking permanent hair dye and chemical hair straighteners to breast cancer. According to a cited study from the International Journal of Cancer, medical records of more than 45,000 women indicated that regular use of permanent dye could increase breast cancer risk by up to 60 percent. “Wow. Today’s news,” Grant wrote. “The numbers are staggering, especially for womxn of color. I went gray prematurely in my early 20’s… and dyed my hair every color along the way until I couldn’t tolerate the toxicity of the dyes anymore. In my 30’s I let my hair turn ‘blonde.'”

She continued, underscoring that her message comes from a place of concern and not judgment. “I love and support that every womxn can choose how she wants to look at every age,” she wrote. “But/and, if womxn are perishing from beauty standards… then let’s talk about those beauty standards. Love to all womxn!”

In what seems to be a continuing trend with Grant, the internet responded favorably to her message. “Wow, my mother died from breast and lung cancer. I always suspected the toxicity of the beauty salon,” shared one commenter. “She was bottle ‘blonde’ my whole life. You look amazing with your silver hair, Alexandra.”

Another agreed with Grant’s take on the potential danger of “beauty” standards, writing, “What you just stated is an incredibly powerful and revealing message; I just love it. One again, we must decide our concept of beauty. We must feel good with ourselves for the kind of people we are and how we treat others. And Alexandra you are incredibly beautiful in and out just as you are. Never change.”

Although it’s too early to tell if Reeves and Grant will last, one of his celebrity friends — with an interesting connection to Grant — has commented on the budding relationship.

After being mistaken for Grant by fans, Helen Mirren told ET at The Good Liar premiere, “I do know Keanu very well. He did a film with my husband [1997’s The Devil’s Advocate] and he is just the most adorable, lovely person. So she’s a lucky girl and I’m sure that he’s a lucky boy.”
