Julia Roberts shot to superstardom as a leading lady in romcoms. But, she hasn't made a new romantic comedy in over two decades.

There's a reason why, she revealed to the New York Times. "What I’ve learned is that you always want to do what you’re not doing. Whenever I’m in a comedy, I think I just want to be at a table with a cup of tea sobbing over something. Then you’re doing that, and you think, Oh to be wearing a pretty dress and laughing," Roberts explained.

She added, "People sometimes misconstrue the amount of time that’s gone by that I haven’t done a romantic comedy as my not wanting to do one." Roberts continued, if she had read a script that was the "level of madcap fun" of My Best Friend's Wedding or as well-written as Notting Hill, she would do it.

That finally exists with Ticket to Paradise, written and directed by Ol Parker. "Even with [Ticket to Paradise], I thought, Well, disaster, because this only works if it’s George Clooney. Lo and behold, George felt it only worked with me. Somehow we were both able to do it, and off we went." Here's everything we know about the new Julia Roberts and George Clooneey romcom, Ticket to Paradise.

They filmed in Australia in early 2022.

Clooney brought his family with him to Australia to film. "We started in Hamilton Island, with all these wild birds, and Julia had the house down just below Amal and me and the kids," Clooney recalled to the Times. "I would come out in the early mornings and be like, ‘Caa-caa,’ and Julia would come out and be like, ‘Caa-caa.’ And then we’d bring her down a cup of coffee. She was Aunt Juju to my kids."

Roberts added, "The Clooneys saved me from complete loneliness and despair. We were in a bubble, and it’s the longest I’ve ever been away from my family. I don’t think I’ve spent that much time by myself since I was 25."

Clooney and Roberts have a long history together.

Clooney and Roberts previously starred together in Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve and Money Monster. During an interview in Cannes, where she was presenting the Trophée Chopard, she opened up about the film and working with Clooney. She told Variety, "I think it’s so funny and George is so funny and George and I together, it’s probably going to be terrible because there’s too much potential for it to be great, it’ll just implode on it itself. I think that should be the commercial for the movie: 'It’s probably going to be terrible.'"

Reportedly their one kiss in the film took "80 takes." As Roberts shared, "It took 79 takes of us laughing and then the one take of us kissing."

Roberts is overjoyed to be returning to her "rom-com muscles."

Roberts loved getting back into the genre, saying, "I love to laugh and be funny. You get into that mode of those endorphins going off when you’re clever and people going, 'Oh!' Then that becomes this automatic thing where you’re always thinking in terms of creating fun. It’s a joy to play in that sandbox. It has been a long time."

In a new interview, she shared, "This is a genre that I love to participate in and watch, and I think they are hard to get right. There is a really simple math to it, but how do you make it special? How do you keep people interested when you can kind of predict what is coming?"

The trailer first dropped in June 2022.

The chemistry between Clooney and Roberts looks as incredible as ever (watch above). They star as two exes "on a shared mission to stop their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they once made," per the film's description.

In the UK, the romcom was set to premiere on September 16, but due to the Queen's death, the premiere date was moved to September 20. "With the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, Universal, Working Title, Julia Roberts, George Clooney and director Ol Parker have all decided to delay the opening of Ticket to Paradise in the U.K. until after the Queen’s funeral out of respect to the Royal Family and the people of Great Britain and Northern Ireland," a Universal spokesperson said in a statement, per the Hollywood Reporter.

The new romcom will be in theaters in the U.S. on October 21, 2022.

We'll update this as soon as we learn more.
