"Nothing against McDonald's, but on award show night, it's In-N-Out," the Oscars host tells PEOPLE

When it comes to Academy Awards night, Jimmy Kimmel says there’s one fast food spot that takes top honors.

“The award show tradition is In-N-Out after the show,” says Kimmel, who’s hosting the Oscars for the fourth time on March 10. “And I think part of why is because when people are in L.A., one of the things on their list is to go to In-N-Out — and there are a lot of people that are in L.A. just for the Oscars — so they wind up going like, ‘Okay.’”

“Also, you get very hungry, so In-N-Out is definitely the award show tradition,” he tells PEOPLE. “Nothing against McDonald's, but on award show night, it's In-N-Out.”

A recent Oscars promo even featured a nod to the burger joint. In the clip, best supporting actor nominee Ryan Gosling pops up in Weird Barbie’s car and exclaims: “I got In-N-Out!”

“It’s kind of this cool social media trend where you get it before the Oscars,” explains Gosling, nominated for his role as Ken in Greta Gerwig's Barbie.

“Actually, I think the trend is to have In-N-Out after the Oscars,” Kimmel corrects him. “Actually, after you’ve won the Oscar.”

“Well, that’s not going to happen,” Gosling says, tossing his drink and bag of food. “Good thing Greta’s got director in the bag,” he adds, before America Ferrera informs him that Gerwig was left out of the category.

While time will tell what winners partake in the trend after the Oscars, Paul Giamatti has already shown his love for the West Coast fast food chain post-Golden Globes. A photo of Giamatti went viral in January after he was spotted eating at a Los Angeles In-N-Out Burger with his award for best actor in a comedy or musical for his role in The Holdovers.

Then a week later, he brought up In-N-Out during his acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards.

"Wow, guys," he said. "I didn't think my week could get any better than going viral for eating a cheeseburger. Serious, guys, I need that endorsement. So, let's all just pray for me."

Kimmel assured PEOPLE that he’d show the photo of Giamatti when the actor visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Feb. 21 — and he did. Asked by Kimmel if he “caused a commotion” in his tuxedo at In-N-Out, Giamatti recalled, “There really weren’t that many people there.”

“Nobody really cared, actually,” admitted Giamatti, who noted that his go-to order is the No. 1 (a “Double Double,” which includes two beef patties, two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and the brand's signature spread on a toasted bun).

When Kimmel wanted to know if Giamatti plans to dine there after the Oscars, Giammati answered, “Yes, probably.”

“But I will stay in the car,” he added.

The 96th Academy Awards will air March 10 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.
