Why Is Haley Joel Osment Dressed Like This for His New Movie?

Haley Joel Osment on the set of ‘Yoga Hosers’

Child actors…they grow up so fast. It was only 15 years ago that Haley Joel Osment was a wide-eyed kid who saw dead people. As photos from the set of Osment’s latest movie Yoga Hosers reveal, however, the 26-year-old actor's latest big-screen character looks like an Adolf Hitler admirer, with slicked back hair, trimmed mustached, and pin-striped power suit.

Osment’s crazy look is part of an equally crazy-sounding movie. Written and directed by Kevin Smith, Yoga Hosers is the second installment in the Clerks mastermind’s “True North Trilogy” that kicked off with the premiere of the horror movie Tusk at this month’s Toronto International Film Festival.  (It opens in theaters on Sept. 19.) Osment also appears in Tusk as the best buddy of a podcaster (Justin Long) who has a bizarre encounter with a walrus-obsessed world traveler (Michael Parks). It’s likely that he’ll be reprising that role in Yoga Hosers, which does feature several characters that carry over between movies, most notably Harley Quinn Smith (Smith’s daughter) and Lily-Rose Depp (Johnny Depp’s daughter, who you can read more about here) as Manitoba-based convenience store clerks. The erstwhile Jack Sparrow himself plays man-hunter Guy LaPointe in both films. LaPointe and the two teenage girls are forced to team up to defeat an evil force bedeviling their town and, more importantly, affecting their chances of attending a killer party.

On the Tusk red carpet in Toronto, Osment revealed some details about his Tusk character. “[Justin and I] have a podcast called ‘The Not-See Podcast’ and the concept is that Justin’s character is sort of the alpha in the relationship and goes around America finding weird stuff that’s happening and comes back to the studio and recounts it to me, and I do not see it. My character serves as a counterweight and has a little bit more heart.” So is his Nazi-esque get-up just a Not-See prank? Or did his character perhaps have his kind heart darkened by the evil that’s causing trouble in the Great White North? Osment’s not saying, even though he’s seen a good chunk of the movie already. “[Kevin] edits as he goes and we watched forty minutes of [Yoga Hosers] two days ago on set and it looks awesome.” Hopefully more awesome than Osment’s character’s fashion choices anyway.
