Among the great Black loves of our time—Will and Jada, Beyoncé and Jay Z, Barack and Michelle Obama—no couple has quite captivated Black audiences in such a uniquely puzzling manner than the way Mrs. Netta and Charles have captivated us through social media.

In an increasingly complicated world—which feels like the end times with all the wars, viruses and cicadas—Mrs. Netta and Charles’ relationship has become the Black internet’s latest guilty pleasure—and their glow up from relatively unknown to making club appearances, marriage and cutting music demos has been hella entertaining.

From what we can see—unlike the other aforementioned Black couples—Mrs. Netta and Charles have no clear talents to speak of beyond their admiration for each other. But in this day and age, sometimes that is all you need to go viral and build a brand that grabs people’s attention.

Charles Your Lunch Is Ready

Everyone’s first introduction to Mrs. Netta and Charles likely started with the now viral video of Mrs. Netta calling for Charles to come eat his lunch. Beyond the plate of food, which is usually packed, there was something about Mrs. Netta’s excitement over seeing her man eat that had everyone gagged, like in the recent video posted below.

Of course there were the usual rude social media comments targeting Ms. Netta’s appearance and discussion of her gender—“Why is Bill Cosby shaking his belly and calling for another man named Charles??” wrote one social media commentator.

But mostly people couldn’t deny that they would love to have someone excited to cook meals for them the way Mrs. Netta does for Charles. And the energy through the phone is infectious.

“I love the Shimmy! It’s like so Dazzling…. Makes me laugh every time. I didn’t know the internet was so lame stop watching them if you don’t like the shimmy! Maybe it’s your face you don’t like 🔥🔥🔥 Charles…. Your lunch is Ready!!!! Netta: Shimmies Me: Laugh Every time” wrote one social media user.

Another social media commentator added, “Cool the food look good and all but what’s the whole point of getting your body done if you’re gonna still be eating like that🤦🏾‍♀️🫠”

The Mrs. Netta and Charles Glow Up

Speaking of “getting your body done,” we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention all the ways in which Mrs. Netta and Charles have harnessed their social media presence to fund a glow up. From product placements to offers for free plastic surgery, Mrs. Netta and Charles have cashed in—thanks to their more than 223K followers, and they have been documenting the process for their audience every step of the way.

“I watched this sh*t like 12 times cause I’m in disbelief” wrote one social media commentator about Mrs. Netta’s BBL and other procedures to smooth out her skin.

Another added, “BABY I ALMOST WRECKED MY CAR SCROOLING PAS TS.”

And lastly, “Ms Netta about to show off dis summer,” wrote another social media commentator.

Not to be out done, Charles also got himself a new set of abs out of their partnership with a local plastic surgery office. Additionally, the couple has done deals and demonstrations sponsored by dermatologists, massage therapists, and even restaurant experiences. The point being: as outrageous as this all seems, Mrs. Netta and Charles’ loyal following has enabled them to access a different quality of living together than what they would have been able to access separately.

Mrs. Netta and Charles Battle Homophobia

Just as their social media fame began to takeoff, Mrs. Netta and Charles allegedly made things official and tied the knot. Right on brand, the glam and outfits for their special day was all documented on their page. But as the couple entered a new echelon of exposure, people began to publicly speculate and discuss what is the real meaning behind Mrs. Netta and Charles’ relationship.

Is it about LGBTQ people and love? Does Mrs. Netta consider herself a trans woman? Does she use she/her pronouns? Or is “Mrs Netta” simply a nickname that was adopted for the way in which Netta tends to husband Charles.

All of these questions and more were explored by trans activist T.S. Madison in an interview on her podcast, and audiences were left with more questions than answers. Netta claimed to identify as a Black man, Joe Robinson, and also claimed that they had never made attempts to identify as a transgender woman or live as a woman—despite having several pictures and videos across social media where they are seemingly presenting as a woman, and the stage name “Mrs. Netta.”

Madison, renowned for advancing conversations around Blackness and defending transgender rights, did not mince words in her confusion over Netta. And there is a complicated subtext to the conversation about Netta potentially profiting off of a community that she/he doesn’t necessarily identify with.

However, Madison shadily respected the hustle in a recent update about the couple on her podcast.

“I think that they are living their best life. They are leaning into their star. They are making their star do what it do for you,” said Madison

Praise them or pan them, Mrs. Netta and Charles are indeed “leaning into their star” and causing conversations about what it means to be Black and identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual in the face of systemic homophobia. And Mrs. Netta and Charles are winning.
