To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.

Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep. Until now. For Season 2, Edebiri has been “promoted” of sorts from supporting to lead, so now the show actually has a shot of claiming victory in all top seven categories.

Edebiri already campaigned as a lead actress for Season 2 at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, where she won both competitions. At the Golden Globes she beat out Elle Fanning (“The Great”), Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”). And at Critics Choice she bested Bridget Everett (“Somebody Somewhere”), Devery Jacobs (“Reservation Dogs”), Lyonne, Brunson and Brosnahan.

According to Gold Derby’s early Emmy odds, “The Bear” is in the lead for Best Comedy Series, White for Best Comedy Actor, Edebiri for Best Comedy Actress, and Moss-Bachrach for Best Comedy Supporting Actor. With Edebiri exiting the Best Comedy Supporting Actress race, potential winners from the show include Abby Elliott, Liza Colon-Zayas and Molly Gordon — but right now the odds leader in that race is Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”).

Note that the writing and directing categories will be added to Gold Derby’s predictions center post-nominations, but specific episodes from Season 2 of “The Bear” to watch out for include “Fishes” (DGA winner & WGA nominee), “Honeydew” (DGA nominee) and “Forks” (WGA nominee).

To date, Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek” is the only comedy series to pull off an Emmy sweep by winning each of the top seven Primetime prizes. It happened for its final season in 2020, aka the “Covid Emmys,” when the cast and crew celebrated virtually up in Canada at their own mini party. It won comedy series, lead actor for Eugene Levy, lead actress for Catherine O’Hara, supporting actor for Dan Levy, supporting actress for Annie Murphy, writing for Dan Levy, and directing for Andrew Cividino & Dan Levy.

Remember, Season 3 of “The Bear” is expected to be streaming on Hulu smack-dab during the Emmy voting process for Season 2, which is the same savvy strategy it utilized last year to great acclaim.
