Why Author Dr. Michelle Stevens Tells Reported Survivor Of Sex Trafficking ‘You Have To Make A Decision Not To Give In To The Despair’

Dr. Michelle Stevens, psychologist and author of the book "Scared Selfless: My Journey from Abuse and Madness to Surviving and Thriving" shares her story.

“When I hear stories about other sex trafficking survivors, I know how hard it’s going to be to adjust to normal life: It’s not your fault. You have to believe that it’s possible to overcome it.” Those are the words of Dr. Michelle Stevens, psychologist, sex trafficking survivor, and author of the new book Scared Selfless: My Journey From Abuse and Madness to Surviving and Thriving.

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Life in crisis?

On Tuesday’s Dr. Phil, Michelle shares her story of abuse; at 8 years old she claims, the man her mother was dating raped, tortured and forced her into a sex trafficking scheme that lasted nearly six years.

“I was prostituted to men, I was forced to do every imaginable sexual act, and tortured in all types of ways,” claims Michelle. “The abuse was so horrible that I really lost all hope and began to think that the only way out was suicide.”

When Michelle sits down with Dr. Phil to speak with Kendall, who also claims to have survived sex trafficking, she tells her, “You have to make a decision not to give in to the despair.”

Dr. Michelle Stevens’ book Scared Selfless: My Journey from Abuse and Madness to Surviving and Thriving, is available March 21.
