Why A 16-Year-Old Girl Says She Ran Away From Home

“I didn’t care. I was done I guess,” says 16-year-old Darbi, explaining why she spent nearly a month living hand-to-mouth on the streets in Los Angeles. The 16-year-old, who ran away from home in October 2016, says she felt her family situation had “gone wrong.”

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Conflict so big it needs a Dr. Phil solution?

Darbi’s parents, Janice and Wayne, have been divorced for several years. The former couple, who paid a visit to Dr. Phil just before their daughter was found, admits they fought for years over how Darbi and her siblings are being raised; but now say they’ve decided to put their differences aside.

“They can’t even sit next to each other like – a year ago or a couple months ago. They couldn’t stand to look at each other. It’s crazy,” says Darbi, thanking Dr. Phil for helping her family. “In the past, it was either this parent – or this parent. And I love them both. I don’t choose parents – I don’t want to choose a parent. And now I don’t have to choose a parent and that feels awesome.”

Why does Darbi say she’s concerned that the change in her parents’ attitudes might not last?
