Whoopi Goldberg made her return to The View after having to miss the Season 27 premiere last week, and made sure to come back in a memorable fashion as always. On Monday (Sept. 11), the veteran entertainer arrived in good spirits and debuted her brand new accessory: a folding chair necklace in honor of the infamous Montgomery brawl.

While she was gone, Goldberg sent in a video about why she was unable to make it to the show last week. “In spite of everything you’ve heard. I am not at Burning Man, I am not still in Italy, I am not trying to change the outcome of the election, I just have Covid,” she stated in the clip.

Before revealing her new necklace, the Sister Act actress led with a disclaimer and a short recap of the incident. “I have to lead this off by saying we do not condone violence on this show… But there was a story that happened last month in Montgomery, Alabama,” she said. “227 passengers was trying to dock his boat in the spot he’s supposed to be in. The co-captain, who happened to be Black, went to confront this pontoon boat that was in the way… So a fight ensued and something happened that we have not seen.”

She then reached to show off her new pendant, which represents the now-famous metal folding chair that was used by a Black bystander to defend the Black dock worker. “If you’re my friend, you better swim to fight for me. People came out of nowhere. The memes are off the hook! I am wearing a folding chair,” the 67-year-old talent declared to the cheering studio audience. Watch the moment above as the crowd gives Goldberg a standing ovation.

Elsewhere in the same episode, the moderators take a moment to remember the victims of 9/11 and pay tribute to the heroic first responders. View the segment below.
