Whoopi Goldberg Says Ben Carson Needs to Watch ‘Roots’

On The View, Whoopi Goldberg responded to recent comments made by Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson. On Monday, during a speech to HUD workers, Carson made a statement comparing slavery to immigration, something Goldberg took exception to.

Goldberg railed, “Maybe we need to get him a history book. Were slaves really thinking about the American dream? No, because they were thinking, ‘What the hell just happened?’”

Goldberg and Joy Behar were quick to point out one of the major differences between slavery and immigration: Immigrants come to the U.S. voluntarily; slaves did not. Carson has since issued an apology on Facebook, but Goldberg isn’t ready to accept the apology so soon after the original statements.

“How does he miss what slavery is? How does he miss that no slave came to this country willingly?” Goldberg asked, adding some advice for Carson, “Ben, Roots. Watch Roots.”
