The Oscar winner visited the Vatican in 2023 and gifted Pope Francis a slew of "Sister Act" merchandise.

Whoopi Goldberg's holy mission to the Vatican may have rounded out the cast for her long-gestating Sister Act 3 movie.

The 68-year-old star has teased the Tyler Perry–produced Disney+ project for years, tossing around casting ideas to everyone from Sheryl Lee Ralph to her View cohosts. In October 2023, however, Goldberg set her sights on Pope Francis to make what might be the holiest cameo of them all.

"I wanted to thank him," Goldberg told Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday's Tonight Show episode. "I've been trying to meet up with him for about 10 years. Every time I say 'okay, we'll do it' I'd step in something and then I couldn't do it and they'd cancel the appearance."

She continued, "This is supposed to be the guy that you talk to. I like him. He's annoyed a lot of people because he said some things that people don't think are correct, but I do. You're the Pope. You say, 'We welcome everybody. We want everybody at our party. We're not going to judge you. Only God judges you.'"

She then revealed that Pope Francis "actually seems to be a bit of a fan" of her role as a singer-turned-nun in the Sister Act movies, which remain some of the most popular entries in the Oscar winner's filmography.

When Fallon inquired about Pope Francis' potential cameo in the third film in the series, Goldberg said, "I offered one. He said he'd see what his time was like."

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Pope Francis for comment.

Goldberg's late 2023 journey to the Vatican made headlines, as it required the EGOT-winning icon to take a brief break from her post as moderator of The View.

At the time, Goldberg said she discussed the continuation of Sister Act with the Pope, who praised her work as an entertainer.

"You know, we're trying to help bring the sisters into the 21st century," Goldberg told him. Though she referred to the project as "silly," Pope Francis stopped her. "One of the best things you can do for people is to help them and to have joy and to make them laugh," he said.

In September 2022, Perry told The View cohosts that he had a solid screenplay for Sister Act 3 but that he was frustrated over the slow process of executing the film in the current climate.

"I loved the idea of us making this happen, but the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I'd like to," he said. "We've got a good script. We're off to a great start. We're just trying to get everybody moving in the right direction to get it going."
