Whoopi Goldberg calls for Trump comment on Ahmaud Arbery shooting

As outrage continues to grow over the shooting death of a 25-year-old unarmed African American man, Ahmaud Arbery, The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg weighed in and questioned why President Trump hasn’t spoken out publicly. A now-viral video appears to show Arbery jogging in a Georgia suburb when he was confronted by two armed men in a pickup truck—a confrontation which left Arbery dead. “Because I’ll tell you—if two black men had been in a truck and watched a white guy go by and just got out and shot him, we’d hear no end to what an outrage it was. We’d hear that from the top,” said Goldberg. “You need to say something, sir. You need to say it and you need to say it pretty soon.” Fellow panelist Sunny Hostin also expressed her outrage at the President’s silence on the issue. “He can tweet about everything else — he can tweet about fake news, he can tweet about late night talk show hosts, but he can’t offer his thoughts on this?” asked Hostin. “This is despicable. Despicable. When does it stop?”

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: I tell ya, if two black men had been in a truck and watched a white guy go by and just got out and shot him, we'd hear no end to what when an outrage it was. We'd hear that from the top.

So I am saying now, here, from-- from my space, you need to say something, sir. You need to say it. And you need to say it pretty soon.

- "The View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg slammed President Trump for not weighing in on the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed 25-year-old African-American man who was seen in a video jogging in Georgia when he was shot and killed by two men in a pickup truck who say they believed he was a burglar. The shooting happened in late February, and neither of the men have been charged with a crime.

Viewers took to Twitter with their reactions. And some said Goldberg was spot on. "As a mother, this angers me to no end. There was no reason for this to happen. I pray this young man's family gets the justice they deserve." And, "re-- young man gunned down-- thank you ladies and Whoopi. AWESOME!"

But others said Goldberg's call for Trump to speak out would fall on deaf ears. And people don't need his take. "We won't hear anything from the man in the big White House that's reassuring. He's apathetic when it comes to racism, because he's a racist. We don't need to hear from him. We need to protest and demand justice in a fair and moral trial."

And "I don't see Donald Trump making any comments about the shooting. There is close to 75,000 dying from coronavirus, and he doesn't seem fazed about this. Donald Trump is only motivated by #WhistleWhileYouWork."

Fellow panelist Sunny Hostin also questioned Trump's silence, noting he speaks out about many other things.

SUNNY HOSTIN: He can tweet about fake news. He can tweet about-- about late-night talk show hosts. But he can't offer his thoughts on this? This is despicable-- despicable. When does it stop?
