Whoopi Goldberg Asks a Teary Sheryl Lee Ralph to Come Back for “Sister Act 3” on “The View”

Walt Disney Studios first announced it was developing a third 'Sister Act' movie in 2020

Whoopi Goldberg is recruiting stars for the long-awaited third Sister Act movie!

When Abbott Elementary's Sheryl Lee Ralph appeared on The View Wednesday, Goldberg, 68, asked Ralph — who had a role in 1993's Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit — to return to the show for an upcoming Sister Act cast reunion. Not only that, she asked the Emmy winner to potentially star in the third sequel, which has been in the works for years now.

"Something that’s gonna happen here in order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sister Act 2, the producers here at The View are working on putting together a reunion," Goldberg told Ralph, 67, after the show aired a scene from the series' second film. "And we’re gonna try to get as many cast members on to share memories from the movie. Would you do us the honor of coming back? And as soon as we know when it is, we’ll do that."

After Ralph said she "would love to" return to The View for a cast reunion soon, Goldberg upped the ante. "I will also do this," she said. "We’re in the process of putting together [the third movie]. Will you come be part of it? Whatever it is."

Ralph appeared to emotionally agree to Goldberg's proposal for a third film during the broadcast.

Goldberg starred in the first two Sister Act movies, released in 1992 and 1993, as a singer named Deloris who is placed in a San Francisco convent by the Witness Protection Program after her boyfriend attempts to murder her. The first film follows Deloris' adventures at the parish while the sequel picks up after she has resumed a singing career in Las Vegas and returns to the city to help her nun friends save the floundering school they work at.

After Goldberg lobbied for years to to make a third Sister Act movie, Walt Disney Studios announced a third film in the series was in development in 2020, with Tyler Perry announced as a producer. At the time, Disney said it would distribute the movie on its Disney+ streaming service, but the movie still appears to still be in development.

Since then, Goldberg has dutifully continued recruiting actors for the movie, including Maggie Smith, who appeared in each of the first two films. She has also said she would like to see Keke Palmer, Lizzo and Nicki Minaj appear in a third film.

"I was told no one was interested in this. It takes a minute for people to realize they should take their foot out of their mouth," Goldberg told Entertainment Tonight of the in-the-works movie back in 2022. At the time, she appeared to say a script for the movie had not been finalized yet.

"You're never fully happy with a script because one of the things you find is you wanna have the space to make an adjustment if you need to," she added. "Sometimes what looks right on paper doesn't come out of your mouth the right way. You have to move it around a little bit, but I'm very hopeful people will be happy."
