Who will win the European Golden Shoe this season?

The European Golden Shoe is awarded annually to the top scorer across all European leagues. In the last 20 seasons an average of 35 goals has been needed to claim the prize, and 11 of the last 12 European Golden Shoes have been awarded to Spain—thanks, in big part, to six-time winner Leo Messi.

Despite a slow start to the season caused by injury, the Argentine is still favorite to be La Liga’s top scorer. But with only two goals to his name so far, he’ll need more than a goal a game going forward to stand a chance of keeping his accolade.

And the same goes for four-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who has four league goals this season, and endured his lowest scoring season in a decade last term.

The favorite to be top scorer in Italy right now is Ciro Immobile, who already has 10 goals in nine games.

In France, Kylian Mbappe looks like a strong contender. He scored a brace at the weekend, he scored 33 last year, and PSG’s big scorelines will help him rack up a big tally.

The same goes for teammate Mauro Icardi, who has seven goals in seven games in all competitions for the Parisians.

The Premier League, meanwhile, hasn’t offered a Golden Shoe winner since Ronaldo in 2008, but there are plenty of contenders.

Jamie Vardy is leading the pack with nine and his Leicester side look superb right now. Sergio Aguero is the bookmakers’ favorite, but he might even be eclipsed by teammate Raheem Sterling.

And lest we forget the likes of Harry Kane, Sadio Mane and last year’s Premier top scorer Mo Salah.

But if I had to back any player right now for the European Golden Shoe, it would be Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

The Pole has an incredible 13 league goals, having scored in all nine of Bayern’s matches so far. The 31-year-old has 19 goals across all competitions before November. That’s absolutely incredible.
