Who Should Play Superman on ‘Supergirl’? Our Shortlist!

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, and it’s coming to the CW! Supergirl makes its big move from CBS to the CW in the Fall, and she’ll be bringing the Man of Steel with her. The first two episodes of Season Two will see a new Caped Crusader cast, so we’d like to throw a few names into the running.

First, let’s talk about who’s out – Henry Cavill and Brandon Routh. Routh was great in the not-so-great Superman Returns, but he’s already playing a comic book hero on a different CW show – The Atom on Legends of Tomorrow. As for Cavill, the DC Cinematic Universe and TV Universe are separate and will never crossover. Furthermore, Supergirl is trying to restart itself on a new network, it doesn’t need the stank of Batman V Superman dragging it down.

As for everyone on the internet, their choice is Matt Bomer. He almost played Clark Kent in JJ Abrams’s Superman: Flyby, but the project fell apart. Bomer did get to play the Last Son of Krypton in this overseas Prius commercial, and that’s almost as good.

Now here are a few we came up with – Aidan Turner. The Irish star of Poldark has the looks and the acting chops, plus he’s on the shortlist to play James Bond. So if he doesn’t end up sipping martinis, the red cape awaits him.

Zachary Levi. The nerdy dreamboat’s name always comes up when people talk Kal-El. He’d be a no-brainer for the small screen role.

Jared Padalecki. Another tall, dark hunk who is often on Superman casting wish lists. Unfortunately for him, Supernatural doesn’t seem to be ending… ever. So he’s probably out.

Zac Efron. So this won’t ever happen, but it almost did for Man of Steel. Seriously. No, look it up. We can wait here…

Weird, huh?

Alright, let’s get serious… the best choice for Superman on Supergirl is clearly… Nicolas Cage! Just kidding, it’s Tom Welling! He was perfect on Smallville, a show which exists in the same universe on the same network. Make it easy on us, we’ve seen so many Supermans over the years, let’s bring back one we actually liked. Or else Nic Cage is going to do it.
