LANSING, Mich. (WLNS — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer leaned into last summer’s “Barbie” movie theme craze with her “Governor Barbie” social media campaign, using the themed doll to advocate for children’s role in social change.

A year later, Whitmer won the Public Service & Activism Webby Award for the Governor Barbie campaign.

The governor accepted the award Monday night in New York. Other Webby award recipients included Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Seinfeld fame; actress and singer Keke Palmer; and Shannon Sharpe, former football star and advocate who accepted the Webby Advocate of the Year Award.

“Governor Barbie and I are honored to have won this year’s Webby for Public Service & Activism on social media,” said Whitmer. “Governor Barbie was introduced so that every child can see a future in public service.”

“For decades, Barbie has been a reminder to children that they can pursue any dream they want to, no matter who they are, what they look like, or what they wear,” Whitmer said. “This award represents everyone who was inspired by Governor Barbie to work together towards a dream world.”
