Whitfield County Board of Education to recognize students on Monday

Mar. 1—The Whitfield County Board of Education is set to recognize several students at its next meeting.

The board will meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Whitfield County Schools central office at 1306 S. Thornton Ave. The meeting is open to the public and a called work session will take place at 5:30.

Students scheduled to be recognized include high school band members, including Northwest Whitfield High School students Andy Nguyen and Henry Griffin who will be performing in the 2024 Georgia Music Educators Association All-State Band in Athens over the weekend.

Coahulla Creek High School band member William Allen will also be recognized for his acceptance into the All-American D-Day Band that performs in Washington, D.C., and French cities such as Paris and Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day this June.

The board will also recognize Southeast Whitfield High School's student mock trial team, which went undefeated for the second year in a row at the 2024 Georgia High School Mock Trial Region Meet to become region champions, as well as Ollie Webb and Terra Burse, two Southeast Whitfield High students who recently brought home state wrestling championships. Burse is the first female to win a state wrestling championship in the school system's history.

In honor of Georgia's School Board Appreciation Week, observed March 11-15 this year, Whitfield County school board members Bill Worley, Jamie Johnson, Ron Johnson, Carolyn Weaver and Joe Barnett will be recognized on Monday.

The meeting is also set to include:

—Readings of the 2024-25 student discipline code and student dress code.

—The selection of the Georgia School Boards Association delegate and alternate for the 2024 Delegate Assembly later this year.

—A presentation from New Hope Middle School's energy team.

—Words of inspiration from New Hope Middle School sixth-grade science and social studies teacher Casey Mitchell.

—Financial updates from Chief Financial Officer Kelly Coon.

—Teaching and learning updates from Deputy Superintendent Karey Williams.

—Construction and operations updates from Chief Operations Officer Mark Gibson.
