What is the plot of 'Mothers' Instinct' 2024?

"Mothers' Instinct" is set in the 1960s and is about housewives, best friends and neighbors Alice and Céline, who seem to have it all.

Alice's son Theo (Eamon Patrick O’Connell) and Céline's son Max (Baylen D. Bielitz) are around the same age. The women drop off and pick their kids up from school together. They also spend time hanging out on the weekends with their husbands, Simon (Danielsen Lie) and Darren (Charles).

Tragedy strikes when Max falls from the balcony while trying to put up a birdhouse they made in school. Alice witnesses everything from her garden and attempts to save Max but it is too late.

Following Max's death, Céline leaves for a month and returns cheerful and optimistic. She gets close to Theo, and Alice becomes suspicious and concerned.

As the death count increases, is Alice paranoid, or is Céline really to blame for what's going on?

What is 'Mothers' Instinct' based on?

The film is partly based on the 2012 French novel "Derrière la haine" or "Behind the Hatred" by Barbara Abel and republished as "Mothers' Instinct" in 2023 by Susan Pickford. It is also partly based on the 2018 Belgian movie adaptation directed by Olivier Masset-Depasse.

"Mothers' Instinct" was released in Lithuania on March 8 and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on March 27.

The film will premiere in China on May 24 and is set for a North American release at an unspecified date according to Variety.
