Video game adaptations have been doing pretty well as of late. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" made over a billion dollars at the movies last year, while HBO's "The Last of Us" was one of the best-reviewed new shows. Now Prime Video gets a turn at bringing a game to life with "Fallout," a TV adaptation of one of the most acclaimed franchises in gaming history.

Amazon's streaming service debuted the first season of its newest show on Wednesday, April 10. Based on the Bethesda role-playing game series of the same name, the show stars Ella Purnell ("Yellowjackets"), Walton Goggins ("Justified"), Aaron Moten ("The Night Of"), and Kyle MacLachlan ("Twin Peaks"). Created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet ("Captain Marvel") and Graham Wagner ("Portlandia"), the show's premiere and following two episodes are directed by Jonathan Nolan, who's also an executive producer and earned praise for his HBO adaptation of "Westworld." The debut season features eight episodes, so it'll be interesting to see how the show designs a post-apocalyptic world that is distinct from other recent dramas while staying true to the spirit of the games it's based on.

What is 'Fallout' about?

The "Fallout" franchise started on PC back in 1997, with four numbered entries and various spinoffs released in the 27 years since. The mainline games are a role-playing affair where players emerge from underground bunkers (known as "vaults") and trek through a post-apocalyptic California wasteland, learning new skills while advancing the core story. Though originally a PC-only franchise, it jumped to consoles with 2008's "Fallout 3," one of the most critically acclaimed games of the decade.

As for the series, "Fallout" is set around 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse ravaged the world. Lucy MacLean (Purnell), born and raised in a vault deep beneath the atomic desert, is tasked to venture outside her comfort zone and rescue her father (MacLachlan). In her travels, she runs into a disfigured bounty hunter (Goggins), an ambitious soldier (Moten) from the Brotherhood of Steel, and a gaggle of other vicious creeps and creatures fighting for survival. They all collide on the surface to find a lost artifact that could change who controls what's left of the world.

When does 'Fallout' come out?

Prime Video released all eight episodes of the first season of "Fallout" on Wednesday, April 10. Each episode runs about an hour long, with the premiere clocking in around 74 minutes.

Where will 'Fallout' be streaming?

"Fallout" is streaming exclusively on Prime Video. After watching the new series, you can check out other Prime Video original series like "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," "Fleabag," and "The Summer I Turned Pretty." It's also the home of various hit movies, including "Titanic," "Top Gun: Maverick," and "12 Angry Men."
