Where can you get a quality steak on Cape? Readers choose top 5 steakhouses.

The Chatham Cut, which opened its doors less than a year ago, has been voted one of two top places to get a steak on Cape Cod.

“We are very much an old-fashioned steakhouse — kind of intimate, we do a lot of special occasions — and we cut our steaks, grind our own beef every day,” said Matthew Keough, manager for the 100-seat restaurant, which takes reservations.

Bar manager Lauren Underwood will serve you dinner at the bar, but can't turn on the TV for you because there isn't one. While most Cape restaurants offer only one or two steak entrees, The Chatham Cut has a half-dozen, ranging from a six-ounce filet mignon for $40 to a 32-ounce porterhouse for $100. Prime rib is also on the menu.

Kitchen manager Thomas LeBlanc has fresh beef delivered daily and cuts the steaks to order, Keough said.

There are several sauces ― The Chatham Cut’s signature steak sauce, creamy horseradish, blue cheese fondue and bearnaise ― but Keough said many people stick with salt and pepper to let the beef’s flavor shine through.

Mahoney’s Atlantic Bar & Grill in Orleans and The Chatham Cut grabbed the top two spots in last week’s Cape Cod Times reader poll. There was less than a 1% difference in the number of votes: Mahoney’s had 20% and The Chatham Cut earned 19.1% of the 220 votes.

Both restaurants serve dinner only, starting at 5 p.m.

Located in downtown Orleans in a 19th-century building that was a dry goods and penny candy store before it became a restaurant, Mahoney’s chef is Ted Mahoney.

According to the restaurant’s website, Mahoney started his career in high school at the former Capt. Higgins (now The Pearl) in Wellfleet. He went to college in Vermont and became kitchen manager of Miguel’s Stowe Away, a now-closed internationally-known Mexican restaurant before returning to the Cape for several years at the Lobster Pot in Provincetown. He earned a degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley under a special program for experienced chefs.

Here is a list of the top five steak restaurants chosen in last week’s Cape Cod Times poll:

Of note: Old Yarmouth Inn is another intimate dining room that serves dinner only and fills up quickly so it's a good idea to book early for birthdays, anniversaries or other special days — not to mention booking for a great steak dinner.

Brazilian Grill

Of note: Open for lunch and dinner, it is thrilling to note that the rodizio (Portuguese for “rotation” or “turn") grill is back to full service after the pandemic meaning there is once again a dozen meats sliced tableside from sword-like skewers. There is also a huge salad bar that goes well beyond salads to include a variety of side dishes.

Bleu

If you go to Bleu for steak, be sure to leave room for dessert. The dessert sampler plate at Bleu Restaurant in the Mashpee Commons features six different treats in a two-tiered tray.

Of note: Open for lunch, Sunday jazz brunch and reopening at 5 p.m. for dinner, Bleu doesn't have a lot of steaks offered, but, like everything else in this bistro with its French chef/owner Frederic Feufeu, it's made to perfection. There is a reason French cooking is seen as the base for all other cooking.
