Where Was “Mother of the Bride” Filmed? Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove Dish on 'Pretty' Thailand Resorts (Exclusive)

The actresses also revealed to PEOPLE the extra-special occasions they celebrated together while filming the Netflix rom-com overseas

Filming Mother of the Bride was as close to a vacation as work can get!

Ahead of the premiere of Netflix's new romantic comedy, costars Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove opened up to PEOPLE about the perks of being on location at two "really pretty" resorts in Thailand: Anantara Mai Khao and Anantara Layan, on the island of Phuket.

"It was my first time ever going to Thailand," adds Cosgrove, sharing that she got to celebrate her 30th birthday while they were on location last May — and her mom even came to visit!

Making the trip even more special? Cosgrove's 30th birthday — May 14, 2023 — landed on Mother's Day last year.

"We celebrated Mother's Day and my birthday, and that was just really special. I don't think I'll ever forget it," the actress says.

To mark the joint occasion, Cosgrove and her mom "went to this really cute restaurant by the beach," which was a nice way to explore after spending time mostly at the resort to shoot, up until that point.

"It was fun, because we rented a car and we got to leave, and then we went to an elephant sanctuary in Phuket one of the days," the iCarly alum recalls. "I've never been to an elephant sanctuary before. I love elephants and animals. It was a really cool day."

Cosgrove's birthday and Mother's Day also coincided with another big birthday: that of Shields' older daughter Rowan, who turned 20 the following day and joined her mom on set in Thailand too.

"Rowan and her boyfriend came, and then she and I had a long weekend on a different island to celebrate her birthday," says Shields, 58. "And it was very sweet to see her see me interact with Miranda."

Adds the actress and model, "There was something just very lovely about seeing mothers with their daughters, seeing my daughter come to be with me, [Miranda's] mother to come be with her. The way it all just worked together was just, you want that."

Mother of the Bride follows Shields as Lana, who gets the surprise of her life at the destination wedding of her daughter Emma (Cosgrove) when she meets the groom's dad — who happens to be her college ex who broke her heart decades earlier, played by Benjamin Bratt.

While Shields jokes "there were bugs the size of newborn kittens" on the "really hot" and often "uncomfortable" set, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience being there with Rowan, Cosgrove, director Mark Waters and the rest of the crew and cast: Sean Teale, Chad Michael Murray, Rachael Harris, Wilson Cruz, Michael McDonald, Tasneem Roc and Dalip Sondhi.

"It felt like theater, from my experience of theater, because we were all thrown together in such a foreign environment ... we were together all the time," she recalls.

"We just all stayed together, which was really nice. And we all lived right near each other [on location]," explains the actress and mother of two.

Adds Cosgrove, "One of the special things about making the movie was — since we were so far away from home, all of us, and in a new place — I really feel like we all got to know each other pretty fast."

Mother of the Bride is now streaming on Netflix.
